Overview
January 2018. Netflix Italia opens a restaurant at BASE Milano for two nights to launch Black Mirror Season 4. The catch: your seat, your menu, and how long you stay are decided by your Instagram follower count and the likes your posts get during dinner.
We came in alongside DUDE Milano, our long-standing creative partner, right after the first concept brief. The two studios co-designed the whole experience as one workstream: the format inspired by the Nosedive episode, the dining mechanics, the live system that read Instagram in real time, and the live direction across the two nights.
Two nights of operations. 2 Cannes Silver Lions in Outdoor. 13 international awards total. #BFSC became the number one Instagram trending topic in Italy within two hours of opening.

The Challenge
Launch a series about the toxic mechanics of social validation by building those mechanics for real, in a restaurant, in front of an audience that came to be entertained.
The concept only worked if the system actually ran on live data. A scripted dinner with actors pretending to follow a ranking would have been a costume party. A working ranking engine that read Instagram every few seconds and changed what happened in the room turned the brief into journalism. The technology had to disappear into the experience, fast enough that guests stopped noticing it and started behaving like the show.
And it had to be safe. Pulling the trigger on a real exclusion mechanic in a public venue, on a Netflix launch, with press in the room, leaves zero margin for technical drift or directorial drift.
Our Approach
Amigdala and DUDE co-designed the format, the dining mechanics, the live system, and the on-night direction as one workstream, not as a creative-to-production handoff. We were in the room from the first concept call onward.
Entry rule: a public follower threshold of one thousand on Instagram. Below that, guests were redirected to the Social Market outside the venue, a parallel zone where they could earn followers by performing tasks calibrated to feel mildly humiliating. Once inside, the dining flow followed the score: higher follower counts unlocked better seats and longer permanence; lower counts unlocked a faster exit path. Every guest had to post their dishes with the #BFSC hashtag.
The live system polled Instagram in near real time on the hashtag, scored every published post, and pushed the result back to three surfaces at once: a live leaderboard projected in the room, the staff workflow that adjusted seating and service speed, and the public expulsion audio. Posts that failed to clear a like threshold within the time window triggered an announcement, calling the guest by username and asking them to leave. The hall of fame and the hall of shame ran side by side on the same wall.
Live direction across the two nights kept the rhythm consistent: when the room slowed, the score thresholds pushed harder; when a moment escalated, the staff and the audio cues followed the cue sheet we had written with DUDE. The system stayed invisible behind the experience, which is the only way it could work.
The Impact
#BFSC became the number one Instagram trending topic in Italy within the first two hours of operations. National and international press picked up the story as a working social experiment, not as branded entertainment.
The work collected 13 international awards across creativity, experience, and social: 2 Silver Lions at Cannes in Outdoor (Immersive Experiences and Live Advertising), 3 Gold at Epica (Media, Events, Experiential & Shopper Marketing), 2 Silver and 1 Bronze at the New York Festivals, 2 Gold at Promax, and 3 Merit citations at The One Show.
From here we keep building. The Black Future Social Club playbook, co-designed with DUDE from the first concept brief through live direction, is the same way we work today on activations and sponsor experiences for brands that want their events to actually do something, not just exist.
